TRA2012 is definitely the place to be.
Chaired by well-known personalities from industry, research and the European institutions, the 13 Strategic Sessions of TRA2012 are forums that offer the best European experts from all sectors and modes of transport the opportunity to present their views on how sustainable mobility will be developed in the years to come and the importance of innovation in this process. Delegates will have the opportunity to debate and interact with the speakers on these views.
The sessions offer a diverse range of topics both in support of TRA2012's overall cross-sector/multi-modal objectives and specific to each of the five partners (the European Commission, CEDR, ERTRAC, ERRAC, Waterborne).
Whether you are interested in:

- Transport safety and user satisfaction
or:
- Competitiveness of waterborne industries
- Efficient interoperable railways
- Intermodal freight and logistics
and also in:
- Sustainable mobility in cities for passengers
- Renewal of transport infrastructure

Waterborne supports TRA2012 with high-level participation
The European Technology Platform (ETP) WATERBORNE is delighted to participate in TRA2012 with high-level participants. WATERBORNE Chairman Willem Laros (pictured left) and Meyer Werft CEO Bernard Meyer will take an active role in the Opening and Plenary Sessions. The ETP's annual student competition, Vision Olympics, for innovative maritime product ideas, has found a unique home for its award ceremony during the first morning of TRA2012.
Launched in 2005 at the Maritime Industries Forum (MIF) Plenary, WATERBORNE brings together the maritime industry, the 27 EU member states, some non-EU states and the European Commission (EC). In February 2006, the ETP WATERBORNE published its vision on the major challenges confronting the European maritime industry, under the title 'Vision 2020', followed shortly afterwards by the WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda (WSRA), presenting the key Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) priorities to achieve the Vision 2020.
It is impossible to imagine today's Europe without waterborne transport and its related operations. Waterborne industries underpin our way of living by facilitating the supply of goods, food and energy, as well as personal mobility and leisure on the water. Almost every maritime invention was made in Europe. About three million people work directly in the European waterborne sectors generating a turnover of about €200 billion with an added value totaling about €90 billion (more than 1% of the EU's GDP).
Although covering very diverse activities, the waterborne stakeholders discovered that joining forces for R&D is the more promising strategy, confirming the goal of the ETPs: to secure and strengthen European competitiveness in dynamic world markets. The key priorities for RDI contained in the WSRA are structured along the lines of the three pillars of Waterborne Vision 2020.
Maritime industry is continuously implementing the ambitious agenda. To this extent, WATERBORNE completed, in February 2008, its WSRA Implementation Route Map (WIRM), its guideline document to concretely implement the WSRA and achieve the Vision 2020 targets. Companies have to invest continuously in RDI supported by member states and the EU supplementing that effort in addressing the right issues within their research programmes.
Having worked at a very fast pace, WATERBORNE continues its efforts to implement its WIRM as a guideline for the sector's long-term R&D, not only towards the Framework Programmes of the European Commission but more and more towards R&D programmes at member state level.
Further, it is the ETP's belief that closer co-operation between the science communities of the maritime and marine world will present opportunities for both groups of stakeholders and steps are being taken to investigate ways forward. This also means that WATERBORNE will explore other areas of maritime industrial activities like sustainable energy from the seas and the impact of climate change.
The next challenge ahead is the HORIZON 2020 for which the ETP is preparing a coordinated action along the policy drivers established in the so-called WATERBORNE Declaration issued in mid-2011. The platform is on the right track and will continue to strengthen the European maritime industry through excellence in RDI.
