Safety of Vulnerable Road Users (VRU's)
Organizer:
Dr. Evangelos Bekiaris, CERTH/HIT Description of the session: This session focuses on safety issues and measures for all types of VRUs, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, as well as particular traveller groups such as children, elderly and disabled. These groups account for 25% of road fatalities, whereas relevant research and aids to enhance their safety are still at their infancy. In this session the results of major projects in the field of VRU safety will be presented from different research angles (i.e. human factors, engineering, modelling, impact assessment, best practice transfer outside Europe). It should be noted that SAFERIDER project has been awarded with the 3rd best exhibit prize during the last ICT 2010 Event of the European Commission, the only project awarded in the field of transport. In addition, within FERSI the priorities of relevant safety policies and research priorities for the enhancement of VRU safety was promoted to the European Commission under the auspices of the Lyon Declaration. Finally, a new working group within the iMobility Forum of ERTICO, responsible for the research priorities and roadmap of future European Research has been established, dealing with VRU safety, co-chaired by W. Verhoeve of CLEPA and S. Nikolaou of CERTH/HIT.
